New Demo, New WAX
Posted by Jackson on Friday, April 11, 2003 - 14:12 (PDT)

TJ13 (whose forum alias is now "Taylor Carr") has released work from his unfinished project, Under Fire. This 5-level pack (that's right... a 5-level pack!) follows the flight of Wesley Carter, co-pilot of the Blue Destiny, after he is framed for the cargo ship's crash. (Demos)

Also new to DF-21 today is an Authentic Imperial Officer. This WAX, made by Steve E. Sherber ("Kir Kanos" on the forums), is based on the officer WAX from the original game; the uniform has been recolored to better match those worn by Imperial officers in the Episodes 4, 5 and 6. (Files/WAXes)

As you can see, the Hall of Fame voting booth is now open for Round Eight, so head on over! (No, Mines is not on the ballot.)

Also, Barry Brien has released his much anticipated showcase level, Manipulating texture size and resolution with INF. With two rooms, Barry shows how to squash and stretch textures, a new technique which allows for high resolution BMs and... the hyperspace effect! (Files/Showcase)

2 New 3DOs and a New Weapon Patch
Posted by Jackson on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - 18:01 (PDT)

Having gone without an update for over the year, the 3DO page finally gets not one but TWO new items added to it today: from Barry Brien, we have a set of textured Death Star Plans, made especially for the upcoming level contest (the details of which will be posted quite shortly). As well, from Jereth Kok we have a textured R2 unit, as seen in Kok's five star Hall of Fame mission, Star's End: The Cloak. A quick thanks to Barry for uploading both files. (Files/3DOs)

Also new is the Stouker Assault Rifle (STAR), a weapon patch from Steven Sherber, who goes by the name "Kir Kanos" on the forums. This, the latest model from Stouker (the same folks responsible for the Concussion Rifle), replaces the Imperial Repeater. (Files/Weapon Patches)

Editing Contest Announcement!
Posted by Jackson on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - 20:43 (PDT)

Just when you thought you'd seen the last of the "Find the Death Star Plans" missions...

It's The Secret Base Remake Editing Contest!

Last time, your task was to think small: contestants in the One Room Wonders competition had to create the most interesting and original add-on level in a space of 32x32x32 DFU. This time around, your challenge is to reimagine much of the prologue mission from the original game. There are no size limitations and authors are free to change anything and everything short of the mission briefing.

All contest entries have to follow the same basic setting: the player must finish at a landing pad and the base must be situated in a remote (or at least hidden) planetary area. Dark Troopers, Boba Fett and Jan Ors may not be included.

Contestants are not permitted to base their entries on projects they've already started or on the original Secret Base mission -- this is a complete reimagination of the level from scratch.

(If you would like more information on the rules, the policy on custom components or just to discuss the contest, visit the Secbase Contest: Rules & Discussion thread on the forums.)

Levels will be judged on design, playability, artistic impression, technical merit and faithfulness to the plot of the original Secret Base. As with last contest, the entries will be put to a public vote to decide the winner.

Anyone can enter, and all valid, working entries will be displayed at contest.df-21.org.

How to Enter

Create the mission in the DF editor of your choice, then zip it up and upload it via the script at uploads.df-21.org, or mail it to contest@df-21.org. Make certain to include a text file stating your name and contact email address, along with any additional info about the entry you may wish to provide.

The deadline for entries is Tuesday, July 1st, 2003, so you have all of May and June (and, if you get started right now, a few hours in April) to work on your reinterpretation of the Secret Base.

Now break open your editor of choice and get to it!

May the Force be with you... always.
